The scientific name for this plant is Euphorbia antiquorum Linn. The plant family Euphorbiaceae includes triangular milkwort, and the genus Euphorbia contains more than 2,000 different species. These species range in size and growth habit from annual weeds to trees and can be found all over the world in both tropical and temperate regions. The majority are succulents and are found in Africa, Madagascar, and peninsular India.

A large, multi-trunked, succulent, xerophytic shrub that can reach heights of 4.5 m to 5 m. The milkwort has a green, spiny, and fleshy stem with 3 to 5 pairs of jointed wings. Small, obovate, fleshy, and deciduous leaves measure just 6–13 mm in length and are tipped with short spines. The milkwort is often seen with no leaves. There aren’t many flowers and they’re very subtle.

Medicinal uses of Milkwort:

1. A laxative effect can be expected from its use.
2. Has anti-hyperglycemic effect – An anti-hyperglycemic action can be seen in an extract made from the roots of the triangular milkwort, which has been studied extensively. A study was carried out in which diabetic rats were administered extracts of triangular milkwort, ethanol, and petroleum ether at a dose of 200 mg/kg each. Following just one hour of treatment with the extract of ethanol, there was a discernible decrease in the amount of sugar in the blood.
3. May prevent cancer – There is some evidence that the triangular milkwort can inhibit the growth of cancer in a variety of different cancer cell lines. One experiment that used triangular milkwort extract resulted in morphological changes, DNA fragmentation, and modifications. The death of cells, which is a natural and controlled aspect of the growth or development of an organism, was triggered by the extract, and this led to the death of cells.
4. In order to treat gout, which is an excruciating inflammation of the joints that is caused by deposits of urate.

• A purgative can be prepared by steeping the bark or latex in a decoction of the plant.
• A decoction that is produced from the stem is provided in order to ease the discomfort that is caused by gout.
• Applying the Milkwort milky juice of latex has been shown to be effective in treating a variety of illnesses, including dropsy, palsy, and even deafness.
• Latex is a good treatment for warts and a variety of other skin diseases when it is administered topically.
• Rheumatoid limb contractures can be treated by massaging the afflicted area with a mixture of latex and margos seed oil (Azardirachta indica).
• The Milkwort latex can be used to provide relief for earaches and can also be used to eliminate maggots in wounds.
